CYP Conditioning Course - all the course participants
Twenty coaches from Cyprus took part in a short course related to conditioning for tennis in Nicosia, Cyprus from 22 to 25 September. The 4-day course was conducted under the supervision of Alex Cuellar (ESP).
The Conditioning Workshop was designed for coaches and players working with advanced players (U16 & Juniors). The workshop included topics such as physical conditioning, development of fundamental physical and perceptive-motor skills, long-term development and training methodology.
The first day of the workshop focused on basic training principles and long-term development, then, strength and speed methods of training in the conference room followed by on-court drills. During the second day, conditioning drills were applied in the training of the most promising 16 & Under players in Cyprus. All the coaches who took part in Nicosia enjoyed watching the players performing the proposed systems of training and drills. The following two days covered speed development and coordination improvement. The key topic of the last day was flexibility and different methods for injury prevention in tennis. The last part, training periodization, was covered in the form of discussion where the coaches discussed different points of view.
On a few occasions during the course, the participants could observe Marcos Baghdatis practising with two of the best Cyprus juniors players at the National Tennis Centre. It was unique experience for the candidates who were able to see the physical elements of the training of a pro-tennis player, who is a role model for young players in Cyprus.
Course tutor, Alex Cuellar commented, "I was so exited to travel to Nicosia to conduct the physical conditioning tennis workshop which was held at the National Tennis Center in Nicosia. I was made to feel so welcome thanks to the hospitality of the Cyprus Federation representatives, Philios C. Christodoulou and Nick Papadopoulos and to all their coaches. I would like to thank Nick Papadopoulos and Hrvoje Zmajic, ITF/Tennis Europe Development Officer for the opportunity to share my experiences with the Cypriot coaches. I hope that it has been a useful learning experience for the coaches and physical trainers and I look forward to hearing about more successful players coming from Cyprus in the near future".
